Online marketplaces have reshaped how brands reach consumers, yet the model is increasingly under regulatory scrutiny. Rules covering VAT collection, tax reporting, product safety and consumer protection are growing more complex for platforms such as Amazon, eBay, Vinted, Etsy and Temu. A clear example is a proposal that would make marketplaces the tax collector, with Chancellor John Healey reportedly considering requiring them to collect VAT from UK sellers whose annual turnover exceeds £90,000. The measure could raise up to £1 billion for the Treasury and builds on 2021 rules that made marketplaces liable for VAT on certain overseas sales. The government argues that continued non‑compliance distorts competition and disadvantages businesses that pay the tax correctly. If adopted, the role of marketplaces would expand across their ecosystems.
