New eBay research shows that UK shoppers are at the forefront of the global move toward second‑hand buying, with almost nine in ten Britons purchasing pre‑loved products in the past year. The marketplace’s 2026 Recommerce Report found 87 % of UK shoppers had bought second‑hand goods in the last 12 months, compared with 76 % worldwide. Regularity is rising: 59 % now buy pre‑loved items at least once a month, up from 46 % a year earlier. Growth is driven by younger consumers, as 76 % of those aged 18‑29 purchase second‑hand goods monthly versus 56 % of shoppers aged 30 and over. Likewise, 47 % of 18‑29‑year‑olds would consider gifting a pre‑loved item, compared with 20 % of those 45 and older. Half of UK consumers cite saving money as the top reason for resale, while 89 % believe recommerce offers real sustainability benefits. Among eBay sellers, 85 % highlight waste reduction and 68 % note extending product life as key environmental advantages.
